The Art Behind Berber Rugs
The Art Behind Berber Rugs
Every Berber House Rug begins with natural materials and ancestral tools that have defined Moroccan weaving for centuries. From wool freshly spun by hand to iron combs forged in tradition, each detail reflects respect, patience, and artistic soul.
At Berber House Rugs, we honor the craft preserving the spirit of Morocco’s artisans, one thread at a time.
The Story Behind the Tools

For generations, Berber artisans have relied on simple, enduring tools — each one carrying history, symbolism, and meaning. Among the most important is the iron comb, known locally as the taska or mushats.
Traditionally forged by local blacksmiths, these combs were used throughout the early to mid-20th century and remain essential in the Moroccan rug-weaving process today. Their purpose goes beyond functionality — they represent discipline, strength, and harmony in the art of weaving.
Each time the comb strikes the threads, it tightens the weft and brings the design to life, ensuring balance in every rug. This rhythmic motion connects the weaver to her ancestors, echoing a craft passed down from mother to daughter for centuries.
At Berber House Rugs, we continue to celebrate these tools not only as instruments of creation but as symbols of patience and cultural pride, reminding us that every masterpiece begins with the simplest touch of tradition.
The Iron Comb (Taska / Mushats)
Traditionally crafted from iron, the taska is a timeless weaving tool used by Moroccan artisans. It helps de-knot fibers and pack weft threads tightly together on the loom, ensuring the rug’s strength and precision.
These combs, still used today, often feature carved handles and symbols believed to protect the weaver from misfortune a blend of practicality and spiritual meaning.
The Shed Stick
In many weaving traditions, a shed stick is an essential and versatile tool. Before beginning to weave, it is threaded through the bottom of the loom to create a strong, even base for pressing down weaving stitches. This helps ensure the fabric stays smooth, balanced, and straight throughout the process.
The shed stick — often made of wood or sturdy natural material is woven through the warp and then turned on its side, creating a space for the roving or yarn to pass easily without twisting or tangling. This allows the weaver to move the fibers through the warp smoothly and efficiently, without the need for a needle.
Shed sticks come in various sizes and materials, depending on the type of weaving. It’s best to choose one that is slightly longer than the width of your warp for consistent tension from end to end. For simple or improvised weaving, even a piece of cardboard or a ruler can serve the same purpose proving that creativity and patience are at the heart of every handcrafted rug.
